Tips on Spotting Anorexia Symptoms

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Anorexia is considered to be a serious illness that can even lead to death. Anorexia symptoms should be identified quickly in order to stop it from causing further damage to affected persons. Anorexia symptoms are usually easy to notice, as the disorder causes both physical and psychical changes. Once anorexia symptoms are confirmed, the patient needs to follow an appropriate treatment, involving therapy and a period of physical recovery.

The most important anorexia symptoms are dramatic changes in physical appearance caused by inappropriate eating (usually people who suffer from anorexia have a lower body weight than the average), obsession with body weight, calories, food and exercise, the refuse of eating normal amounts of food, irregular meals, attempts of replacing food with coffee, caffeine-based beverages and diet pills, unusual eating habits and rituals (playing with food, avoiding to swallow food or throwing it away).

People with anorexia have a strong will and keep drastic diets in order to lose weight. Some of them eat less food than their bodies require and often even refuse to eat at all. There are moments when anorexics eat large quantities of food during a single meal, only to later purge it out of their system by vomiting or using laxatives and diuretics.

An interesting aspect in the behavior of people with anorexia is the distorted perception of their own bodies. Even if they are actually underweight, anorexics still consider themselves to be fat. Also, they are never content with how much weight they lose, always trying to become thinner.

Anorexia symptoms include dizziness, lack of concentration, migraines, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, nightmares, depression and loneliness. Persons with anorexia isolate themselves from the world, fearing that they won’t be understood by other people. Although they usually refuse any kind of social interaction, deep inside they long for acceptance and guidance. Anorexics experience considerable drops of self-esteem and self-respect and develop feelings of unworthiness. They often complain about their physical appearance, always considering themselves to be fat.

Women and girls who suffer from anorexia experience hormonal imbalances. Due to the lack of vital nutrients, their bodies produce less estrogen than usual, causing irregular menstruation. Sometimes menstrual periods even stop completely in the case of female anorexics that indulge in abstinence from food. Anorexia also affects the fertility of women and girls, reducing their chances of remaining pregnant. Hormonal imbalances also cause bone deterioration, leading to osteoporosis. Women and girls with anorexia have weak bones, teeth problems and fragile fingernails.

Other anorexia symptoms are low blood pressure, irregular heart activity, low body temperature due to bad circulation of the blood, muscular rigidity and abdominal cramps.

People who suffer from anorexia or other eating disorders expose themselves to a lot of dangers. Inappropriate eating and exhausting physical exercises seriously weaken the immune system of persons with anorexia, making them vulnerable to many diseases. It is very important to spot the signs of anorexia before it is too late. Although anorexics deny having a problem, they should be aware of the dangers they expose themselves to and they should be provided with advice, help and support in order to overcome their illness.

The Benefits, Joys and Danger of the Sunlight

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

THE BENEFITS OF THE SUN-RAYS

If the exposure to sun light is moderate, the benefits outnumber the dangers. First of all sunshine has a good effect upon the mental health and well-being, both due to the visible light and to the warming effect.
The UVA rays in the sunlight stimulates the skin to produce vitamin D. This vitamin is necessary for the normal composition, growth and regeneration of bone tissue. By to low levels of vitamin D in the body, the bones tend to loose calcium and get thinner and weaker. Newer findings suggest that many people do not get enough of this vitamin through the diet or do not absorb enough from the intestines, and need this stimulation to get good enough levels of vitamin D.

Newer findings also suggest that moderate amount of sunshine does not promote the occurence of skin cancer. On the contrary, in moderate amounts, exposure to sunshine seems to help prevent cancers of several types., especially breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer.

The benefit that most people go for when engaging in sun bath, is the browning effect. This effect comes from the UVA rays stimulating the melanocytes in the skin to produce more of the brown pigment – melanin. The increased amount of melanin will protect the skin against the harms of sun-rays, and make you tolerate greater amounts of sun before harmful effects occur. The sun rays also stimulate the upper layer of the skin to grow thicker, and this makes the skin more robust against damage. As long as this thickening is moderate, the thickening is a good effect.

THE DANGERS OF THE SUN-RAYS

The most visible danger of exaggerated sun exposure is the burning effect caused by the UVB rays. The effect is mostly due to immune cells in the skin releasing histamine. Histamine then causes blood vessels to dilate and also cause other symptoms of acute inflammation. Some cells will also be injured by the sunlight to such extend that they die, causing the upper layer of the skin to flake away.
.
Exaggerated exposure to sun can cause brown spots – liver-spots. Furthermore it can cause the cancer type called basal cell carcinoma. These effects are caused both from the UVA and UVB rays. This type of cancer looks like brown flakes or brown spots, and may be difficult to distinguish from liver-spots. However, this kind of cancer is little malignant, and is in many cases just a cosmetic problem.

But the UVA and UVB rays from too much sun exposure can also cause malignant melanoma. This cancer consists of melanocyte cells been transformed into cancer cell. Malignant melanoma often evolves from birth marks. This cancer can remain small for a long time, but can also spread and develop very rapidly and swiftly evolve into a serious disease. In its initial stages, the cancer looks like an irregularly shaped and abnormally or irregularly coloured birthmark. People having been exposed to much sun and often been sunburned form an early age, are in special risk for malignant melanoma.

Traditionally skin cancers were thought to be caused by the UVB rays, but newer findings suggest that the whole ultraviolet spectre participates in causing cancers. Therefore using solariums that gives off only UVA rays is not safe from cancer risk.

Too much sun exposure for a long time will increase the speed of skin aging and cause permanent changes in the skin, due to the effects of UVB rays. The wrinkles will multiply and aggravate. Also the blood vessels in the skin tend to become permanently dilated and areas of the skin will often get an abnormal or irregular thickness, some places too thin, other places too thick. Due to the widened blood vessels, the skin will be permanently red.

UVC rays are normally filtered out from by the ozone layer in the upper atmosphaere. Nowadays this layer is wakened over certain areas in certain times. These rays are the most dangerous and easily cause cancer and other types of skin damage.

WHAT IS THE BEST PROTECTION AGAINST SUNLIGHT

The best way to get just enough sun exposure to get the benefits, but not so much to suffer the harms caused by sun rays, is just to expose your skin for the sun some time, and then cover the skin by clothes.
The time recomanded for naked exposure vary considerably. A person with brown skin can take much more than a pale person. The same is true about a person with thick skin. As you get used to the sun each year, you will gradually get browner and also tolerate more. If you take sunbath for the first time in the year, and you have not yet get used to the sun, 10-15 minutes may be enough.

However, often you want to expose your skin to the sun rays longer than an unprotected skin can tolerate, and then you have to use some topical sun protection. Sun balms are found with protection from 3 to 30. The protection factor is supposed to tell how many times longer you can be in the sunshine with the balm on, than without the balm. Be aware that the real protection factor may be less than that written on the bottle.

A balm with the factor 20 does not always really have that factor. If you know you can tolerate 0.5 hours exposure without protection, do not think that you really will tolerate 10 hours exposure with a balm of factor 20 on. The balm must also be renewed several times during the time you expose yourself for the sun. That is especially true if you take swims. The balm must neither be too old.

The face is the body part that it is most important to protect against the sun, since the face does not have any clothes on, and accordingly gets longest sun exposure.

Some kinds of nutrition seems to make the skin more robust against the impact from sun rays. It is for example wise to eat much fish and use olive oil in the diet. You should also attend to the news about the ozone layer, and always protect your skin in periods with weakened ozone layer.

Natural Organic Skin Care – Herbs Not Just For Eating

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Hi everyone, Hope your weekend was fabulous! I definitely enjoyed mine. So we’ve been talking about what you’ll need when making your own organic natural skin care products. We’ve discussed tools, jars, oils. In today’s article I’ll be going over herbs. I like this part. I think growing your own little herb garden is fun and a great way to add a little green somewhere in your life. Not only can you use them for cooking, you can use them for beauty products, too. You can control the environment and what goes into them. We know that herbs have been around forever and have been used for a ton of different things. They are medicinal, nutritional, full of flavor, definitely fragrant. Their cleansing and skin-pampering properties have been respected for many, many uses. So as we go along in making our own products and you come across a herb that you really like inform yourself about it and see what it requires, how you can get the most out of it, its current and historical uses, and what the books recommend for its uses. This is an excellent way to educate yourself and will help when making your own products. So all the herds, flowers, berries, seeds, barks, and roots we will be using will be easy to find and will be used in the dried form unless noted. If you’re growing your own herbs you may want to dry them yourself. If they are recently dried you’ll have maximum aroma, and nutrients, this will make your product incredible.

If you are drying herbs that you’ve grown there’s a few things you’ll need to know or remember.

*Always use a sharp knife or scissors when cutting your herbs. You’ll want to do this in the morning
*Harvest your roses, calendula, chamomile, or lavender when the bud is matured and the flower has recently opened
*Make sure you do not have any pests and disease on your herbs
*Avoid overdrying
*Dried herbs should be kept in a cool, dry place away fro sunlight. Glass jars, ziplock bags, plastic containers work well

When hanging your herbs to dry gather them together make a bundle and tie a string or use a rubber band to hold them together at the stems. You’ll need to hang them upside down in a well ventilated area, out of the sunlight. Ideally the temperature should be between 65-85 degrees. Don’t forget to label your bundles, and keep them separated. It may take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks or more to completely dry your herbs. If your drying roots and seeds they may take much longer due to their moisture content. When your herbs are dried they’ll be a little brittle, buds will feel dry and a bit crisp, roots will be pliable, and berries, seeds, and bark will be hard and dry. You can also use a screen to dry herbs or tightly stretched out netting. This will allow it to dry quicker, and you’ll want to use some cheesecloth to make sure the herbs stay debris free. Wrap the herbs in cheesecloth, then place in the netting. If you’re doing this outside make sure you check your weather!

When growing your own herbs, make sure they get the right amount of sunlight, water, and you are using good soil. It is the best way to get organic natural ingredients for your organic natural skin care products. I enjoy my herb garden and so do my family and friends! Have a great day and till next time OrganicBeautyGirl…

Massage Therapy

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

What was once considered luxury is quickly coming to be seen a serious medical aid, as 3,000 years of research and practice have demonstrated. Massage therapy is what it is, and while the Eastern worlds have turned this art into health-beneficial techniques, it is only recently that the western world has come to embrace it, and so happily realize that massage is not only feels pleasant, but can also ease pain and prevent disease.

The techniques used in massage therapy vary widely, and any one massage therapist will be trained in a few, if not a wide array, of the many existing techniques. Massage therapy, a combination of pressing, kneading and stroking various parts of the body, does much more than relieve stress, which is one of its most obvious and immediate benefits.

Fortunately, stress relief is just the tip of the iceberg of massage’s health benefits, and as doctors have come to realize this, massage therapy has become a common sight at the doctor’s office – from chiropractor to physical therapist. Massage therapy penetrates circulation and lymph nodes, thus improving blood flow and the effective removal of wastes from the body. Better circulation and a more efficient lymphatic system will improve skin as well, as surface capillaries will be stimulated, and urea will be leaving the body more efficiently, giving the skin a break.

In general, the healthier movement of oxygen and more rapid clearing of bodily wastes will leave you feeling energized and replenished. Massage also affects soft tissues, which include tendons, ligaments and muscles, thus easing pain and lessening stiffness that feels as though it comes attached to these soft tissues.

Overused and tense muscles will benefit dramatically and will feel better immediately. The ability to move with more ease paves the way to a healthier life, as those sore joints will no longer prevent you from getting the exercise necessary to stay healthy and fit. Studies are now giving reason to believe that massage not only affects the circulation and superficial soft tissues, but deeper internal organs as well, which can prove to be important in providing supplementary treatment to diseases affecting the organs.

For optimal results, massage should be routine. While one certainly feels relaxed and de-stressed after a massage, one isolated massage is not enough for massage therapy to sprout its benefits in full. Regular massage sessions with a professional masseuse will lead to the full health benefits and leave the body feeling younger and stronger.

Massage techniques vary, and specific techniques are recommended for specific ailments, but all share in common the benefits of massage, including relaxation, release of stress and pain on soft tissues, and improved circulation, among others. Specific techniques certainly do have their specific strengths. Shiatsu, for one, deals with the energy that affects the nerves and the body. The Japanese word “shiatsu” is translated as “finger pressure”. Thus, this type of massage will have its greatest effect on the nervous system, relaxing one’s whole being.

Swedish massage was developed in the 1800’s and made great waves in therapeutic massage. A Swedish physiologist created a system of five basic strokes, which serve as the basis for many types of massage today. These strokes include vibration, stroking, friction, tapotement, and kneading.

Another massage technique, vastly different from either of those mentioned, is foot reflexology. This technique approaches massage holistically, treating the body as a whole. In other words, applying pressure and massage to specific points in the feet affect the entire body. Thus, the reflexes in the feet are connected to all of the parts of the body (including the organs), and stimulation of the feet, in turn, stimulates the corresponding organs, thus affecting the entire body. Massage therapy, through its various means, achieves balance and relaxation throughout the body.

Massage therapy is growing in popularity for more reasons than just the pleasant sensation and immediate stress-relief so necessary to deal with our contemporary, fast-paced lives. Massage also has long term benefits that are really very worthy bonuses received in addition to the immediately gratified benefits. The age-old wisdom of massage is dawning on the new and modern medical techniques as worthy and useful.

Through the different techniques, like Shiatsu, Swedish and Reflexology, to name a few, countless benefits are derived, such as relaxation and stress relief to soft tissue, improved circulation and lymphatic system, and clearer skin. In the great game of life, all decisions need to be weighed for their risks and benefits. Fortunately, massage provides the benefits, while your mind lays at peace and forgets the troubles of the world, if only for an hour a week!

Lemons for Asthma Attacks and Other Illnesses

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Lemons, they are one of the best fruits to use if you are sick or have asthma. Learn why and how you need to use them if you have asthma

Most people shy away from lemons because they are sour. Or, they make lemon juice and then kill their beneficial effects by adding sugar. Well, here is what your are missing if you don’t drink fresh natural lemon aid every morning.

For asthma, lemon juice is great because it,

It is antiseptic – kills germs that hide in your mucus
It destroys bad bacteria that lives in your mouth, stomach, and intestines
It helps to dissolve mucus so when you have a cold or cough you recover quicker. The combination of 8 oz of water and lemon greatly cuts into your thick mucus that builds up in your bronchial tubes.
Helps to cleanse your blood and clean blood makes your lung tisse healthier

Lemons are high in vitamin C and potassium. They also contain plenty of fiber and phytochemcials, which contain antioxidants many of which have not been studied.

Use only lemons that are yellow and don’t have any signs of green. You can store lemons in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and they will last for up to 5-6 days. To use these lemons bring them out and let them come to room temperature.

If you have a lot of lemons, you can squeeze the juice and freeze them in ice trays for later use.

If you have acid reflux or ulcers use lemons with caution and use your common sense to decide how much juice to drink. With acid reflux or ulcers use DGL or Mastic gum to clear the H..pyloric bacteria.

Lemons also tend to thin the blood so if you are on drugs that thin the blood, avoid using a lot of lemon juice.

When you have asthma, you can use 3-4 lemons daily. You can use up to ten lemons per day without much problem when you are trying to resolve a health issue. What you can do for asthma is make a thermos drink where you squeeze 4-5 lemons into 32 oz or less of distilled water and drink this juice all day long. Just remember to rinse out your mouth with fresh water after you drink the lemon juice.

Do you know what glaucoma is?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which damage to the nerve located in the back of the eye (optic nerve) results in loss of eyesight. At first, side (peripheral) vision is lost. If glaucoma is not treated, vision loss may continue, leading to total blindness over time.

There are three basic types of glaucoma.
• Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is the most common form of glaucoma in the United States. In open-angle glaucoma, the optic nerve is slowly damaged, usually causing gradual loss of vision. Both eyes can be affected at the same time, although one may be affected more than the other. Sometimes much of your eyesight can be affected before you notice a change.

• Closed-angle glaucoma (CAG) is less common, accounting for about 10% of all glaucoma cases in the United States. In closed-angle glaucoma, the colored part of the eye (iris) and the lens block the movement of fluid between the chambers of the eye, causing pressure to build up and the iris to press on the drainage system (trabecular meshwork) of the eye. (See an illustration of the iris and lens.) It may cause sudden blurred vision with pain and redness, usually in one eye first; symptoms may also include nausea and vomiting. A related type, acute closed-angle glaucoma, is often an emergency situation and needs immediate medical care to prevent permanent damage to the eye.

• Congenital glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma that is present in some infants at birth. Glaucoma that develops during the first few years of life is called infantile glaucoma. Infants with congenital or infantile glaucoma usually have cloudy eyes that are sensitive to light and have excessive tearing. Symptoms may not develop until 6 months to 1 year after birth. If the problem is not detected early and treated, the child may have severe vision loss and may go blind. People between the age of 3 years and young adulthood can develop a similar type of glaucoma called juvenile glaucoma.

Cholesterol and Children?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

“Autopsy studies have revealed that many signs of atherosclerosis including scarring are now found in the arterial walls of the babies in this country; that by the age of ten, half children have coronary arterial lesions; and that 100 percent of them have mild atherosclerosis by the age 15.”

How this can be?

Your Diet during your pregnancy is very important for your unborn child… And if you are breastfeeding… your breast milk can have high fat/hormone content, partially reflecting your diet. The truth is brutal I must to admit, which is even more compelling to face this problem today, before it is too late… But still…

Are children neglected or not? Oh, no… Sick children are creating a new business for the ‘Health Industry’ for years to come. But why? Food Industry created this problem and there is no way out. As Donald Trump is saying: “It is nothing personal… It is business.” And for the Food Industry it is an easy business to market junk food to children… and Bioengineered food to the rest for us. In the end… we all are victims.

When I looked under the microscope the blood simple of 13-year-old boy – it was as thick as the car oil! And there are millions just like him, not knowing when the Cholesterol bomb will explode in the form of heart disease.

Oh, and did I mention that high Cholesterol is ignored because there are no visible symptoms? Sound familiar?

The bottom line is… All children must be checked for High Cholesterol annually… And the Lab Blood Test is the most accurate. But first, let’s talk about yet another issue I’m a little concerned, Cholesterol Home Test… Home Test as good as it is, won’t show the Risk Factor ratio. So, if the Risk Factor is high… nutrients to utilize fats in the blood are the best choices for children and for adults as well. Many claim they have it… but if they do, you won’t read this now.

It is a Gift to create a natural product superb quality and effective, which is strong for adults, and at the same time safe for children. And with ZERO side effects. Wow…

GOOD NEWS… There is really safe and easy way to help your child without the devastating side effects that medications can have. The health benefits are extra, but many companies would charge you for it… Are you intrigued?
