Planning a Pregnancy One of the Often Overlooked Stages of

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Many people refer to the stages of pregnancy as the three trimesters. However, your health before you get pregnant plays an important role in having a healthy pregnancy and in giving birth to a healthy baby. Although many pregnancies are unplanned, when you do start thinking about having a baby it is essential to start the process of planning. Before you even know that you are pregnant, the baby is starting to form in the womb and the organs are starting to develop. To give the little one a head start, the planning stage is a critical one that you shouldn’t overlook.

When you plan your pregnancy, you will likely conceive easier and avoid many of the complications associated with pregnancies. The healthier you are before you get pregnant, the easier delivery you will have and the faster you will recover. This means being aware of your body and the changes it will go through over the 40 weeks of the pregnancy. You do need to have a complete check up to ensure you don’t have any pre-existing medical conditions that will make it difficult for you to conceive and carry the baby to full term. The first step is to stop taking birth control pills. It may take you two or three months after this to be able to conceive. However, if you are using other methods or birth control, such as condoms or a diaphragm, you can easily become pregnant right away.

You should know the common signs of being pregnant, such as a missed period, tender and swollen breasts, an increase in the urge to urinate and nausea. Your emotions will also start to change so that you may start crying over very insignificant things, which could cause your partner to get frustrated with you. These changes occur before you have your first pregnancy test, so you may not even realize that you are going to have a baby.

The care giver you choose is a part of planning your pregnancy as well. You may opt to use a midwife or a physician. If you do encounter complications, the physician may refer you to a gynaecologist early in the pregnancy or may wait until later. You should get used to being poked and prodded and having many different kinds of medical tests and exams. These include blood tests, tests for glucose and urine tests. Ultrasounds are also part of the prenatal care in which the doctor can determine the health of the baby.

Where you choose to have your baby is also something that you need to consider. While many women choose to have the baby in the regular delivery room of the hospital, you may want to have your baby at home. You do need to make sure that the birth setting you choose offers the best medical care so that if complications arise during the birth they can be handled at this location.

Learning to reduce the amount of stress in your life is also a part of the planning stage. Stress can cause you to enjoy or detest the idea of being pregnant, which in turn will affect the health of the baby. Make sure you are in good physical shape before you become pregnant so that your muscles, joints and ligaments are strong. You should also continue with your exercise as best you can while you are pregnant.

As for your biceps, you can noticeably do standing barbell curls, alternate dumbbell curls, incline dumbbell curls and preacher curls. A preacher curl involves you lifting a barbell on a preacher bench.

The last part of your upper body building workout is your triceps. For your triceps you can do standing cable press downs, triceps bench dips, overhead rope extensions and one arm dumbbell extensions.

Bursitis and its Treatment

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

What is bursitis, you ask? The “-tis” at the end of the word bursitis tells you it’s an inflammation. It’s caused by an inflamed bursa, a small jelly-like, often fluid-containing sac found throughout the body. A bursa is usually located at the point of your shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and elbows. The bursa cushions the soft tissues against the hard bone and reduces the friction that gliding muscles make against the surface of the bone.

Common symptoms of bursitis include a dull ache or stiffness near the elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, big toe or other joints; a worsening of pain with movement or pressure; swelling, warmth and redness in the area.

Treatment:

1. Medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh and Ekang-Veer-Ras are used for prolonged periods. If the bursitis is due to an infection, medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Gandhak-Rasayan are used in order to treat bursitis.

2. Acupuncture Acupuncture can help reduce the inflammation and relieve the stiffness that accompanies bursitis, and it may promote the drainage of excess fluid. Acupoints targeted vary, depending on whether the pain is located in the hip, knee, or shoulder. Acupressure Acupressure can be used to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with bursitis.

3. In most cases, bursitis can be effectively treated by completely resting the affected joint. However, there are also a few easy-to-use home remedies which can assist in relieving bursal inflammation.

4. Turmeric – Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The active ingredient, curcumin, is responsible for these properties and in studies has shown to be as effective as potent anti-inflammatory drugs, but without the side effects. Turmeric can be taken internally as well as used topically.

5. Bodywork is a Swedish massage treatment using rhythmic, flowing strokes directed toward the heart. There are several different forms of bodywork that are useful to treat the chronic joint pain of bursitis sufferers.

6. Bursitis can disappear within 2 weeks if the joint is given absolute rest. During this “time off,” RICE therapy (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) is recommended, and many sufferers wear special braces or wraps to keep the area immobilized. Aspirin can be used to keep inflammation in check. Some physicians inject cortisone into the affected joint.

7. Physical therapist. While rest is prescribe as a care and relief, on the other hand exercise can help relieve some areas of the body. A therapist can go through a variety of exercises with you including range of motion to help get your joints back in shape. These variety in movement will allow the area to go through a range of motions, as the area affected was normally dominated by one movement.

8. Because shoulder bursitis is a similar symptom as shoulder tendinitis, a rotator cuff physical therapy strengthening program will prove effective. These strengthening programs will help with regaining strength and full motion of the shoulder.

9. The Ayurvedic treatment of bursitis is aimed at controlling the pain and reducing the swelling and inflammation in the bursae. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras and Vish-Tinduk-Vati are used to control pain.

Treatment for Canker Sores

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

If you are the one suffering from canker sores, then I don’t need to describe how painful and annoying that they are. You probably already know more about the pain than you’d like to know.

While no one really understands what causes canker sores, there are numerous things you can do to instigate a home remedy for a nasty canker sore. Here are some tips.

Treatment:

1. Put 5-7 drops of grapefruit seed extract in a glass of water and drink it three times a day. Grapefruit seed extract has the reputation of being an excellent anticeptic. Be warned, though, it tastes worse than awful. Use a strong juice like grape juice to disguise the flavor of the grapefruit seed extract. As a little side note, this is also my mother-in-law’s cure for the common cold also!

2. Over the counter covering and numbing preparations may also be of help relieve the pain i.e., Orabase, or Colgate Soothe and Seal.

3. Rubbing aloe, lemon balm extract, or tea bags to cold sores is also known to lessen their size and help reduce pain. Drinking less coffee is another home remedy for cold sores. It is believed that coffee can be a catalyst in the formation of cold sores. It is recommended that people who are susceptible to cold sores cut back on their coffee intake.

4. Mylanta – It may seem strange, but many health professionals suggest swishing around Mylanta in your mouth. You don’t need to swallow it though. This will help to coat the canker sore and also treat some of the bacteria. It should also help relieve the pain.

5. Potassium chlorate is also an effective home canker sore remedy. The patient just combines a teaspoon of the potassium chlorate with a cup of water and gargles with it several times each day. This should not be swallowed, just swished around in the mouth and then spat out.

6. Try using liquids or ointments that have a numbing agent such as benzocaine (Anbesol, Orabase, Tanac) that will help relieve the discomfort of canker sores

7. Since emotions change naturally, we can expect that eventually the canker sore will go away. Sometimes, though, the emotion persists…and so do the canker sores. The key now becomes to let go of the negative emotion at will, instead of having to wait for chance to release it.

8. Baking soda is a time honored remedy that can be used in powder form, or made into a paste and applied directly to the sore. This is another one that might sting a bit at first, but repeated treatments are reported to clear up canker sores in a couple of days.

9. If none of these ideas help there are some more intense things you can try. Talk to your doctor about getting some canker sore relief. It is possible that you are allergic to a food or several foods that irritating your mouth. You may be referred to an allergist for testing. If the tests come back showing that you are allergic to certain foods, then you need to eliminate the offending food and see if that helps.
